O’Connell became just the sixth General Manager in Boston
Bruins history when was named to the post on November 1, 2000. He is also
the team’s Vice-President, and in these positions, he is involved
in all aspects of the on-ice operation of the club. Mike was elevated
to GM following six seasons as the B’s Assistant General Manager,
and has been instrumental in bringing outstanding young talent into the
organization and making key acquisitions to improve the club’s performance.
His teams have won two Division titles and have compiled a 152-98-39-27
record and a .585 winning percentage during his tenure as General Manager.
Raised in Cohasset, Massachusetts, Mike has more than twenty years experience
as both a player and an assistant coach in the National Hockey League
and as a head coach in both the American and International Hockey Leagues.
He enjoyed his best NHL seasons as a player during his six years in a
Bruins uniform. O’Connell record 50-plus point seasons for three
straight years from 1982-85 and represented the team in the 1984 NHL All-Star
Game. He won the WSBK-TV Seventh Player Award in 1983-84 and still holds
the club record for consecutive games scoring a goal by a defenseman with
a seven-game streak during that season. Perhaps his proudest moment as
an athlete came last September when he and his teammates hoisted the Will
McDonough Cup after winning the Sean McDonough Foundation Celebrity Golf
