A talented center, he scored at least 70 points in a season twelve times as a member of the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins. The 1971-72 season represented the high point of Ratelle’s stellar career, as he established his personal high of 46 goals and 109 points for the Rangers, and was the recipient of the Lady Byng Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award as the top player in the NHL as chosen by his peers. During the 1975-76 season, Jean was involved in one of the biggest trades in hockey history when he came to Boston with defenseman Brad Park in return for Phil Esposito and Carol Vadnais. He continued his outstanding play in Boston and helped the B’s reach consecutive Stanley Cup finals in 1977 and 1978. He retired in 1980-81 with 491 goals and 1,267 points, an output that placed him sixth on the NHL’s all-time points list at the time.
