Mark Bavaro is one of the best tight ends in the history of football. A native of the Boston area, Mark starred at Danvers High School before embarking on a collegiate career at Notre Dame. Mark was an All-American for the Fighting Irish in his senior year when he caught 32 passes. He was voted Notre Dame’s Offensive Most Valuable Player. Mark began his NFL career in 1985 with the New York Giants. He caught 37 passes (second on the Giants) in his inaugural season and was a unanimous selection to the NFL’s All-Rookie team. He set a team record with 12 catches for 176 yards against Cincinnati. He was New York’s leading receiver in the 1985 playoffs with 9 catches, and was a ferocious blocker on a squad that set the franchise record for rushing yards in a season. In 1986, Mark set the Giants club record for receiving by a tight end with 66 receptions for 1,001 yards. He was a unanimous All-NFL selection and a starter in the Pro Bowl. He was again New York’s leading receiver in the playoffs with 8 catches, including a touchdown in the Super Bowl win over Denver. In 1987, he was the Giants leading receiver for the second straight season and was again a unanimous All-NFL selection and Pro Bowl starter. He had 55 catches in just 12 games with a career high 8 touchdowns and 4 100-yard receiving games. His career was hampered and ultimately cut short by injuries, but Mark is regarded as one of the all-time greats.
